Treaty of San Stefano
~written by Matt Thompson
Peace settlement at the end of the Russo-Turkish War in which Russia imposed on the Ottoman government. It included the establishment of an independent Bulgarian principality that included most of Macedonia, realignment of other European provinces of the Ottoman empire, and surrender of certain parts of Asian Turkey to Russia. Austria-Hungary opposed it because they were cheated out of land at the end of the war. Britain opposed because they did not want so much Russian influence near Constantinople. These oppositions lead to its modification at the Congress of Berlin.
